When the Japanese company Epoch introduced the sylvanian families way back in 1985 the products caught immediate attention and became instantly popular. In result a number of leading companies dealing with children toys started distributing them. A series of video games and anthropomorphic collectible plush figures in children toys, the characters created include beavers, mice, bears, and hedgehogs. Characters created were befitting the name as “sylvan” means the forest.

Simultaneously released in Japan and United States with different packaging as well as a few minor differences in the characters, the products were further expanded and became one of the major success stories by 1988 across the globe in toy market.
For three consecutive years the product earned the “Toy of the Year” from the British Association of Toy Retailers from 1987 through 1989. In 1993 the distributor of the toys, Tomy, lost out the name Sylvanian Families in Canada and United States but reintroduced the product with the name of Calico Critters. Now the International Playthings, LLC is its distributor in US and Canada.
